Section "A"3Philip Woodwell, Honoree United States Air Force

Accompanied by the Patriot Riders
Philip is a 93-year-old originally from Reading, Pennsylvania, who at the age of 18 joined the United States Air Force, serving from 1949 to 1953. He acquired the rank of Staff Sargent. This Korean War Era Veteran followed the footsteps of his two brothers and sister, who had joined the military during WWII.

Philip became very proficient in Early Radar Advances during the cold war while serving in Alaska. He saw the phasing out of the B-29 and the introduction of its replacement, the B-37 and experienced flying over the North Pole in a B-29. Philip worked on the State-of-the-Arts Communication Advances in the early 50’s.

Upon leaving military life, his technical knowledge was put to good use. As the race for space was in full swing, he had a front row seat in the battle over technology between the USA and the Soviet Union. His 20-year-tenure with Boeing Aircraft allowed him the opportunity to contribute to many programs, including the “Star Wars Program” and the development of the first working infrared device, which created the first television remote control.

Philip Woodwell finally retired in the early 1990’s to Tampa Bay Florida where he and his family have lived for over 30 years.

Thieves of San LorenzoThe Krewe’s name, signature red heart bead and motto ‘WE’LL STEAL YOUR HEART” came from a heartwarming story that took place centuries ago on the Caribbean Isle of San Lorenzo. The legend tells how these women and their beautiful settlement were victimized by pirates while their men were away at war. These strong willed, independent ladies acted and stole back what was theirs, thus stealing the hearts of their community. Today’s Thieves represent 110hardworking women. Staying true to their heritage, they have fun and focus on giving back to the community they love through volunteerism and charitable work. Their 4 local charities are: Shriners, Ronald McDonald House and the Veteran’s Hospitals along with The Crisis Center of Tampa Bay.
